Used Log Splitter

December 31, 2009

You may be able to save a lot of money buying a used log splitter. If you have ever bought a new car and learned that it dropped by nearly 20% as soon as you drove it off the lot, then you can understand why you can find used log splitters at such good prices.

Of course, just like buying a used car, you need to be cautious when looking at used log splitters to buy.

A lot of people find and buy used log splitters on ebay and that is fine but I do recommend that you make sure the seller has sterling feedback ratings and that they have enough feedback ratings that you can be confident in them.

Personally I have never had any major issues buying that way but I always make sure the seller has great feedback.

Another decent place to find used log splitters is at garage or estate sales. Granted they are not as plentiful in these venues but if you are patient you might find a really good deal.

For me, the problem is that I usually don’t look at buying anything until I have a pressing need. And at that point I can’t wait around and trudge through a lot of garage sales and/or estate sales.

There are two basic categories of log splitters: hyraulic and electric. Okay there are three, but I’m guessing you don’t want to buy a sledge and a wedge to get the job done.

For used hydraulic log splitters make sure the cylinder is not leaking. These can be costly to repair or replace. For electric, make sure the wiring looks good and that the motor does not have any rusted places in/on it. It seems a lot of people make the mistake of leaving the splitters out in the rain. That’s generally not a problem with hydraulics but electrics are another story.

The last couple of things to check is to be sure the frame is not bent and the cutter blade is not bent. These can be bent if the user attempted to split logs that were too large for the splitter. If either of these are bent, then I would look elsewhere for a used log splitter.
